Caligo Ventures has lots of exciting birding tours coming up in 2009. We like the fact that Caligo makes a point of using local naturalist guides in the host country. In March, they are offering a birdwatching trip to the Panama Canal Area and the Western Highlands. The trip offers chances to see the Resplendent Quetzal and the Scintillant Hummingbird, among scores of other species. It should be quite an experience to stay in the Canopy Tower Lodge, where birders often see the Green Shrike-vireo and the stunning Blue Cotinga.
If you are someone who is interested in taking some time away from the daily grind, you may find that ecotourism is perfect for you! At the most basic level, ecotourism can be defined as a method of travel and recreation that does not harm and in fact helps the environment. The Nature Conservancy and World Conservation Union has formally defined the practice of ecotourism as needing to be "Environmentally responsible travel to natural areas, in order to enjoy and appreciate nature (and accompanying cultural features, both past and present) that promote conservation, have a low visitor impact and provide for beneficially active socio-economic involvement of local peoples."
When taking a closer look at ecotourism, you will find that it further needs to have the following characteristics. First, it is vital that the experience is one that has a low impact on the world around; the presence of the ecotourists as well as their behavior should be designed to leave as small an environmental footprint as possible. There must be a reasonable amount of sensitivity towards the local cultures and environment, and there should also be an aspect of appreciation for the local conservation efforts.
Ecotourism as a practice should be geared towards the benefit of the the cultures that host it, and it should provide educational benefits for both the travelers and the locals communities that choose to embrace this practice. Many opportunities for ecotourism make the local culture and the local natural resources the main event of the trip; unlike other tourism opportunities, the entire point of the betterment of the world around you. You may find that some examples of ecotourism will involve things like volcano watching, cycling holidays, or even working towards improving the culture around you. When looking for the right ecotourism option for you, take a look around and think of what interests you, and what parts of the world you hope will still be around for your descendants to experience.
It is also important to understand that not all travel to natural areas are not sustainable, and therefore, is not considered ecotourism. Perhaps the most important thing that distinguishes ecotourism from other recreational endeavors is the fact that there is a strong emphasis on conservation, low-impact practices and education. Ecotourism is simply not an industry that is geared towards luxury; instead, it will strive to be affordable, and in the same vein, it will look to reduce waste in the form of luxury. At the most basic, ecotourism is aimed towards being non-exploitative with regards to the environment and the local cultures.
More and more people are discovering that there is a great deal of benefit in terms of interesting experiences and environmental support that comes from ecotourism, and the venues for this activity are getting wider and wider. There is no end of the places to go and to experience, and for people who are uncomfortable in luxury situations or simply downright bored, this could very well be the experience of a lifetime!
